The 2023-24 OCAA volleyball regular season came to an end this past weekend. Attention now turns to the playoffs which kick off on Saturday September 10th.
After finishing with a 14-4 record, the men's team earned the 3rd seed in the OCAA East. Their most notable win came on November 25th at home when they handed the #1 seeded Georgian Grizzlies one of their two losses on the season in straight sets. Many Wolves players have had strong statistical seasons. 4th year Left Side Mahmoud Abdelaziz is 2nd in the OCAA in hitting percentage at .386. He is followed closely by 5th year Outside Jeff Commerford who is in 3rd in the OCAA at .382. 3rd year middle Connor Finnie is 2nd in the league in blocks per set at .88 and Jacob Matheson sit in 4th in the OCAA in assists per set averaging 9.11.
Algonquin will be taking on the Niagara Knights who finished in 6th in the OCAA West with a 11-7 record. The Knights are no sloutch, as they lost in 5 sets on 3 seperate occasions against West opponents in the top 3. Algonquin is hoping to lean on the energy of their home crowd to help them move on to the second round. First serve is set for 2:00 pm on Saturday February 10th at the Jack Doyle Athletics and Recreation Centre. The winner of this matchup will move on to face the winner of Fanshawe and Canadore in the 1/4 finals the following weekend.
On the women's side, the Wolves finished with 9-9 record, securing the 5th seed in the East. A come from behind win over Georgian on the final weekend of the regular season helped them earn that 5th seed. The Wolves will lean on the experience of 5th year Libero Emilie Menard in hopes of making a deep playoff run. Menard is in 2nd in the OCAA in digs per set at 4.07. Algonquin will travel to Hamilton to take on a Mohawk Mountaineers team that finished 4th in the OCAA West with a 10-8 record. First serve is set for 1:00 pm at the David Braley Athletics and Recreation Centre in Hamilton Ontario. The winner of this matchup will go on to face the winner of Sheridan vs Seneca the following weekeind.
